Loud snoring, waking up gasping, morning headaches, all-day exhaustion despite a full night in bed — these are the hallmarks of obstructive sleep apnea, and it's more than an annoyance for your partner. Untreated, it strains the heart and steals your energy. What many people don't realize is that a dentist is often part of the solution.
First, the Diagnosis Comes From a Physician
Let me be clear up front: sleep apnea is a medical condition that must be diagnosed by a physician, typically through a sleep study (which can now often be done at home). My role as your dentist is treatment — providing and managing an oral appliance once you have a diagnosis and a treatment recommendation. We collaborate with your doctor; we don't replace them.
What Oral Appliance Therapy Is
A dental sleep appliance is a custom-made device — think of a slim, comfortable mouthguard — that you wear only while sleeping. It holds your lower jaw gently forward, which keeps the airway open and stops the soft tissue at the back of your throat from collapsing and blocking your breathing. That's what silences the snoring and reduces the apnea events.
Why Many Patients Prefer It
- No mask, no hose, no machine noise — just a small appliance
- Quiet and travel-friendly — fits in a pocket, needs no power
- Easy to wear — for mild-to-moderate apnea and snoring, comfort means consistent use
- A real option for CPAP-intolerant patients who've given up on the mask
CPAP remains the gold standard for severe apnea — but only if it's worn. For the many people who can't tolerate it, or who have milder apnea or primary snoring, an oral appliance is a genuinely effective alternative. If you also grind your teeth, we'll factor that in, since it overlaps with our night guard care.
