Chronic bad breath — halitosis — is one of those problems people quietly battle with mints and mouthwash for years. The reason those don't work is simple: they mask odor instead of removing what's making it. Nearly always the cause is in your mouth, and once you find it, it's fixable. Here's how.
Where the Smell Really Comes From
- The tongue: the rough back surface traps bacteria that release sulfur gases — the #1 source in most people
- Gum disease: infected pockets around teeth are a constant odor factory
- Between the teeth: food and plaque that brushing can't reach
- Dry mouth: saliva washes bacteria away; less saliva means more odor (common with mouth-breathing, some medications, and dehydration)
- Decay or a failing filling/crown: a hidden cavity or leaking restoration that harbors bacteria
The Fixes That Actually Work
Clean your tongue daily. A tongue scraper (or your brush) on the back of the tongue removes the coating most people never touch.
Floss every day. This clears the between-teeth bacteria that brushing and mouthwash simply can't reach.
Stay hydrated. Sipping water keeps saliva flowing; sugar-free gum helps stimulate it too.
Treat the root cause. A professional cleaning — or deep cleaning if there's gum disease — removes the buildup home care can't.
When to See a Dentist
If bad breath sticks around despite good tongue-cleaning, flossing, and hydration, it's time to have it checked. Persistent halitosis is your mouth flagging something — usually gum disease or a hidden cavity — that's straightforward to treat once we find it. Occasionally it points to a medical cause like sinus issues or reflux, and we'll help you sort that out too.
