Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery in Wylie TX — Day-by-Day Guide

By Dr. Chakrapani Nannapaneni, DDS · UCSF School of Dentistry · February 2026 · Wylie TX

Pulling a wisdom tooth is usually a lot less of an ordeal than people brace for — but the first 72 hours call for specific care that most patients fumble. The classic misstep is being too rough with the site: rinsing too hard, poking it with the tongue, sipping through a straw — and knocking the clot loose. Here's the precise day-by-day plan I give every patient at Merry Dental Hub.

Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline

Day 1 — The Most Important Day

Some bleeding in the first few hours is expected. Bite down steadily on the gauze you're given and swap it out every 30–45 minutes until the flow tapers off. Use an ice pack on a 20-on, 20-off cycle to keep swelling down. Take your pain medication before the numbness wears off completely — don't hold out until it hurts.

  • ✅ Cool soft foods, cool liquids, rest
  • ✅ Keep head elevated (even while sleeping)
  • ❌ No straws, no spitting, no smoking
  • ❌ No hot foods or drinks
  • ❌ Don't rinse or probe the socket
Days 2–3 — Swelling Peaks

Swelling hits its high point somewhere around 48–72 hours — perfectly normal. Keep up the ice packs. After the first 24 hours, start mild salt water rinses (½ tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water), swishing softly and letting it drain out rather than spitting hard. Pain should stay in check with ibuprofen and any prescribed medication.

  • ✅ Gentle salt water rinses
  • ✅ Soft foods: eggs, pasta, soft bread, bananas
  • ✅ Continue ibuprofen on schedule
  • ❌ No crunchy, chewy, or spicy foods
Days 4–7 — Gradual Improvement

The swelling starts going down and each day hurts a little less. By day 3 or 4 most people are back at work or school. Soft foods are still your friend. Brush your other teeth as usual, just stay off the extraction site itself. If the pain is climbing instead of fading after day 3, reach out — that could be dry socket.

  • ✅ Resume most normal activities
  • ✅ Gentle brushing around (not on) the site
  • ❌ Still avoid hard/crunchy foods near the site
  • ❌ No strenuous exercise for 5–7 days
Week 2 and Beyond — Full Healing

By the time week 1 wraps up, most people feel completely normal. The socket itself takes 3–6 weeks to seal over, and bone continues filling in for several months afterward. Once you're past two weeks, there are no more food restrictions. Keep the area clean with soft rinsing until it's fully healed.

Dry Socket — The Most Common Complication

⚠️ Warning Signs — Call Us If You Notice:
  • A severe, throbbing pain that intensifies after day 3 (normal pain eases off)
  • Pain spreading toward your ear, jaw, or temple
  • A socket that looks hollow — bare bone instead of a dark clot
  • A foul taste or odor that rinsing won't clear
  • A fever over 101°F or swelling that grows after day 3

Dry socket shows up in roughly 2–5% of extractions, more often with lower wisdom teeth. It responds well to treatment — Dr. C packs in a medicated dressing that eases the pain within hours. Call (972) 483-4848 the same day.

What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal

✅ Good Choices (Days 1–3)
  • Yogurt, pudding, applesauce
  • Smoothies (no straw after Day 3)
  • Mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potato
  • Scrambled eggs, soft tofu
  • Ice cream, gelato (no crunchy toppings)
  • Soup broth (not too hot)
  • Soft pasta, well-cooked oatmeal
❌ Avoid for 7–10 Days
  • Anything crunchy (chips, nuts, crackers)
  • Chewy foods (gum, tough meat, bagels)
  • Small particles (rice, seeds, popcorn)
  • Hot foods or drinks
  • Alcohol (interferes with healing)
  • Spicy foods (irritate the socket)
  • Straws (suction dislodges clot)
