Top 10 Dental Implant Questions — Answered Honestly

By Dr. Chakrapani Nannapaneni, DDS · UCSF School of Dentistry · July 2026 · Wylie TX

After placing implants for two decades, I've noticed the same ten questions come up again and again. Here they are, answered the way I'd explain them to you across the desk — no jargon, no hard sell.

1. Do implants hurt?

Far less than most people expect. Placement is done under local anesthesia — with sedation if you'd like — and because jawbone has few pain nerves, recovery is usually milder than a tooth extraction.

2. How long does the whole process take?

Typically 3–6 months from placement to final crown, most of which is the implant fusing to bone. You're not without a tooth during that time — a temporary bridges the gap.

3. What's the success rate?

Around 95–98% for healthy patients — one of the most reliable procedures in all of medicine.

4. Will it look natural?

Yes. The crown is custom-shaded to match your neighboring teeth — most people can't tell which tooth is the implant.

5. What if I don't have enough bone?

Very common, and solvable. Bone grafting rebuilds the foundation so an implant can be placed securely.

6. Can I replace all my teeth with implants?

Absolutely — All-on-4 anchors a full arch on just four implants, restoring a complete smile without a plate covering your palate.

7. How do I care for an implant?

Just like a real tooth: brush, floss, and keep your checkups. No special products required.

8. Are implants worth the cost?

Over a lifetime, usually yes. They rarely need replacing, protect your bone, and spare neighboring teeth — costs that dentures and bridges quietly rack up over the years.

9. Am I too old for implants?

There's no upper age limit — health matters more than age. I've placed implants for patients well into their 80s.

10. Does insurance help?

Often, partially — and we verify your benefits and offer financing for the rest. See our implant cost guide for a full breakdown.
