Caring for Your Child's Teeth at Home — Age by Age

By Dr. Chakrapani Nannapaneni, DDS · UCSF School of Dentistry · July 2026 · Wylie TX

The habits your child builds at home matter far more than anything that happens in my chair twice a year. The good news is that great pediatric dental care isn't complicated — it just changes a little as they grow. Here's a practical, age-by-age guide you can actually follow on a busy weeknight.

Babies & Toddlers (0–3)

  • Wipe gums with a clean damp cloth even before teeth appear
  • Brush twice daily with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste once the first tooth erupts
  • Never put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice — it bathes teeth in sugar all night
  • Aim for that first dental visit by age one

Preschool & Early School (3–6)

  • Move up to a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste; teach spitting, not rinsing
  • You still do (or closely supervise) the brushing — little hands miss a lot
  • Start flossing wherever two teeth touch
  • Make it fun — a two-minute song or a favorite app timer works wonders

School Age (7+)

Around age seven most kids can brush on their own, but keep an eye on consistency and technique. This is also the age when dental sealants on the new molars pay off — a thin protective coating that dramatically cuts cavities in the grooves where kids get them most.

Food & Drink: The Real Battleground

Cavities are driven less by the amount of sugar than by how often teeth are exposed to it. Constant sipping of juice, sports drinks, or milk, and all-day snacking, keep the mouth acidic. Water between meals, sugary treats with a meal rather than grazed across the afternoon, and crunchy fruits and veggies all help. For the full picture, see our pediatric dentistry page.
