Fillings are the most frequently performed restorative treatment in dentistry — and also one of the most misunderstood. Plenty of patients put off a filling because nothing hurts yet, not realizing that the delay can turn a 30-minute, $200 visit into a far bigger ordeal. Here's the full picture on today's fillings, the materials at play, and what the visit is actually like.
Composite vs Amalgam — The Filling Material Debate Settled
| Feature | Composite Resin (Tooth-Colored) | Amalgam (Silver) |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Matches tooth color exactly | Metallic — shows when you smile |
| Bonding | Chemically bonds to the tooth — saves more structure | Held mechanically — more tooth must be removed |
| Longevity | 7–10 years on average | 10–15 years on average |
| Cost at Merry Dental Hub | $150–$350 | $100–$200 |
| Insurance coverage | Covered — 80% on most PPO plans | Covered — sometimes at a higher rate for back teeth |
Merry Dental Hub places only tooth-colored composite resin for new fillings. The cosmetic edge speaks for itself, but there's a clinical upside too: because composite bonds to the tooth, we take away less healthy structure than the mechanical grip amalgam needs.
What the Filling Procedure Actually Feels Like
Most people are taken aback by just how fast and easy a modern filling is:
- Numbing (3–5 min): A topical gel goes on first, followed by a small local anesthetic injection. That injection is the least pleasant moment — usually a quick pinch. From there, most patients feel nothing of the filling itself.
- Decay removal (5–10 min): Dr. C clears out the decayed part of the tooth with a drill. You'll notice vibration and pressure, not pain. The sound of the drill is bigger than what you actually feel.
- Composite placement (10–15 min): The resin goes in layer by layer, each set with a blue curing light for 20–40 seconds. No heat, no discomfort.
- Bite check and polish (5 min): Dr. C confirms the filling meets your bite properly and smooths it out. If it feels tall once the numbness fades, let us know — it's a simple fix.
After Your Filling — What's Normal
- Numbness for 1–3 hours — steer clear of hot drinks and eat carefully until feeling returns so you don't bite your cheek
- Mild sensitivity for 1–2 weeks — cold especially; it's a normal part of the tooth settling in. Sensitive toothpaste helps if needed.
- Bite feels a little off — call us if it sticks around more than a day; a quick bite adjustment takes about 5 minutes
- Sensitivity that worsens — if it's climbing rather than easing after two weeks, reach out. That can mean the cavity went deeper than expected and a root canal is needed.
Think You Might Have a Cavity?
The earlier a cavity is treated, the simpler the fix. A Stage 2 cavity is a 30-minute filling; a Stage 4 is a root canal. Call Merry Dental Hub to book an exam.
