When you're replacing several teeth — or a whole arch — the choice usually comes down to implants or dentures. Both restore your smile, but they behave very differently day to day and over the long haul. I'd rather you decide with the full picture than with a sales pitch, so here's how the two genuinely compare.
The Core Difference
A denture is a removable appliance that rests on your gums. A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone that acts as a replacement root, with a crown, bridge, or fixed arch on top. That one structural difference — sitting on the gums versus anchored in bone — drives almost everything else.
Side by Side
| Factor | Implants | Dentures |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Higher | Lower |
| Bone health | Preserves bone | Bone keeps shrinking |
| Chewing power | Close to natural teeth | Roughly 20–40% |
| Daily care | Brush & floss like teeth | Remove, soak, adhesive |
| Lifespan | Often decades / lifetime | 5–10 years, then remake |
When Dentures Make Sense
Dentures aren't a lesser choice — they're the right choice for plenty of people. They win when budget is the deciding factor, when significant bone loss would require extensive grafting for implants, or when a health condition makes surgery unwise. A well-made denture restores a confident smile at a much lower entry cost.
The Middle Ground: Implant-Supported Dentures
You don't have to pick an extreme. Placing just two to four implants to anchor a denture — including All-on-4 — stops the rocking and slipping, restores most of your bite, and protects the jawbone, all for far less than replacing every tooth individually. For many of my Wylie patients, this is the sweet spot.
